English as a lingua franca

English is always the most suitable language to be called "lingua franca".
However in my country, Japan, people can't really speak it. I guess it because lack of opportunities to speak it and the way teachers teach.
Anyways, I taught my friend's brother English for his exam coming. It is the most famous English examination in Japan, and schools prefer student who has a higher grade of that exam, called
Eiken.
For today, we did some exercises about the past tenses like the differences between "have been" "had been" and "have been being". Hope he understood correctly!

His exam is coming on 14th of October, so I guess I am going to have another chance to teach him!
